Octopi Studio logo
4ourX5ive
is a video player I designed that plays 20 videos simultaneously
(and can be painted away...)

I was looking for a way to present video work that I've done beyond the conventional one-video-at-a-time presentation method.
I wanted something more instantly available, a conflation of viewing time; an expanded narrative.

All videos were edited to loop, then encoded for the web for minimal bandwidth usage while retaining maximal image quality - a balancing act requiring equal amounts art and science. Interface and animation elements were created both in Flash and Illustrator. Developed using AS3.

4ourX5ive is a flash application that plays twenty looped videos simultaneously
together with one sound file

  • 1. a penguin swimming
  • 2. cherry blossoms and hail falling
  • 3. day of the dead dancing and sugar skulls
  • 4. birds on a wire
  • 5. a child jumping from a rock in a misty mountain lake
  • 6. slow throbbing hexagons
  • 7. a butterfly
  • 8. a man with a megaphone turning, turning
  • 9. a peacock
  • 10. a punk metal rock band playing
  • 11. an airplane flying
  • 12. a sunny path between snowy trees, kids running
  • 13. airborne suds in the SAM sculpture park fountain
  • 14. snails
  • 15. children dancing, inside
  • 16. a cat cleaning, licking itself
  • 17. mist blowing up a mountainside
  • 18. two men riding logs gondola-like on the Columbia River, fight, both fall in
  • 19. early evening, a girl turns on a sidewalk
  • 20. time lapse of a snowy backyard day to night

controls include

  • 1. a start/stop toggle switch
  • 2. a volume slider bar
  • 3. an

    ENOUGH! button

    • • which when clicked plays a video of a brush wielding hand dripping and painting over the existing twenty videos (which are still playing, or not)
    • • under the ensuing blank white screen it says ahhhh, minimalism is refreshing...    ...but give me just a little more!
more button

more, when clicked, starts the next video. A man enters frame right and walks into the blank white distance, then starts to run, jumps, and throws what turn out to be black stylized flowers into the air.

At this point the video turns into animation. The flowers stick to the screen accompanied by sound, turn into colors, slide down the screen, leaving colorful stripes. Another black flower twirls outward getting larger, turns into the Octopi Studio logo which remains subtley animated hovering over the stripes, as if breathing.

Two links are provided, one back to the videos, movement, and one back to the blank screen, emptiness.
